Forty years ago today I rode the train from Hong Kong through the New Territories and walked across a pedestrian bridge into Red China, continuing the adventure of a lifetime. I’d been to Canada, but never any further out of the country. I’d been enamored of China since a young girl with the “legal” Chinese my grandfather oversaw as a caretaker on the Starr estate north of New York City.
